Immunization Survey: It’s that time of year again where all of our student records are evaluated in order to comply with the state of Alabama immunization law. Letters will be sent out this week for those students that have immunization forms that have expired. Also, please be aware this year that the state of Alabama is requiring the chicken pox vaccine for all K4 through the 7th Grade. (Your child will be exempt if they have already had the chicken pox). You may also receive a note if we don’t have a copy of your child’s social security card or birth certificate. We ask you to please comply quickly so that your child’s record may be complete.
PARENTS OF JUNIORS: The PSAT is scheduled for October 15th!
Financial Aid Workshop - Tuesday, November 11, 2008 (6:00 p.m.) - HA Cafeteria : This workshop will be for all parents interested in knowing all of the important information of dealing with college federal financial aid and loans. This will be presented by Mr. Tommy Dismukes, the Vice President for Admissions and Financial Aid at Huntingdon College. He had years of experience in this field, and also does several of these presentations annually in the Montgomery area at various schools.
College Campus Visits: We have recently had several admissions counselors to visit the school. The students were able to preview their particular college choice and what each has to offer. In September, Hooper hosted Troy University, Auburn University and the University of Alabama. In October, we will be hosting Huntingdon College, Auburn University Montgomery, University of West Alabama and Trenholm Technical College. Each of these visits from the counselors has been an excellent opportunity for the students to see a showcase of various colleges.
Selective Service : All senior young men are required to register with Selective Service within 30 days of your eighteenth birthday. The Selective Service is a government agency whose job is to provide untrained manpower for the Armed Forces if there is a national emergency. You can register online at www.sss.gov or go by the Post Office and complete a registration form.
Senior Conferences/Deadlines for College Applications: By now I have met with your child and they are focusing on making application to the colleges we discussed for them. Please make sure and encourage them during this grueling process so that they may reach their goals that I have assigned them individually. December 1 is the “rule of thumb” deadline for college applications. I believe that it is never too early to be making application with their college of choice. Remember, early application = early acceptance.
College Opportunities/Scholarships: Each year a large 3-ring binder is compiled noting any scholarships, college opportunities, deadlines, etc. that seniors need to know. This is information that is mailed to me from various colleges across the nation. The notebook is housed in the Guidance Office, and checked out by students during elective classes. Also, as I have received information I have tried to immediately let the students know of each scholarship opportunity. Plus, I visit 12G and 12W during English to make them aware of any new information I have received. I did not receive a huge response on parents receiving an e-mail on scholarship information. Therefore, I am choosing to e-mail you as parents individually when I am working with your child on a particular scholarship instead of through mass e-mails.
